- Map layer is visible.
- Map layer is hidden. Not all map layers are
available at zoom levels or map scales and you can expose more by zooming in. Montana DEQ Layers These Map Layers represent information collected and maintained by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). Montana DEQ Layers that are made visible will be those whose items are searched for within a specified distance of the Map Note coordinates.
Please see the Map Notes section of the Help for more details on this type of search. Reference Layers These Map Layers are used for reference and provide more context to the map than just the chosen Basemap.
The viewable and searchable area of the map is confined to the State of Montana. The map will not let you move too far away from its intended spatial focus of helping you understand Montana's environment. Pan or Move To pan or move around the map click and hold down the left mouse button then move you mouse. You can also use the arrow keys on your keyboard. Zoom In or Out To zoom in & out of the map or change the map's sclae use the scroll wheel on your mouse, the up & down arrows on the zoom slider in the top left corner of the map, or the plus (+) or minus (-) keys on your keyboard. Zoom to Box To zoom into a specific area of the map, you can hold down the [Shift] key on your keyboard and then click and hold your left mouse button while dragging your mouse to draw a box around your area of interest.
When you release your mouse button the map will pan and zoom into the area you defined.
Many different basemaps are available to choose from to use as the base or primary layer for all other Map Layers to sit on top of. Basemaps can only be used one at a time and but can be viewed at any map scale to help you understand the spatial context of the Map Layers you have turned on.
By clicking once with your left mouse button on the map a pop-up information window will appear providing details "About This Location".
Along with coordinates that become more defined the further you are zoomed in you will be
provided with specific information about features found within its included Map Layers.
Find Features Around the Identified Location Just below the declared Latitude & Longitude coordinates in the "Location" tab you can search for items in the Montana DEQ Layers you've made visible.
You can then specify a search radius up to 30 miles of that location. A results window will show you the items found within your search area.
Individual Feature Reports Some map layers will present more detailed information via their own tab. These specific Map Layer information tabs may provide the count (#) of those features found at that location as well as more details about each item found within that layer.
Pop-up Window Locatino The pop-up About This Location window is not a floating window on top of the map, but anchored within the map at location you clicked.
Depending on the size of your monitor and screen resolution, the Map Note may be rotated around its anchor point in a way that places it in a area of the map not currently in view. If this happens, pan or move the map to encompass the area the Map Note is anchored to.
You can search for specific mapped features or locations in the map via the Search menu above the map window.
Search for Address You can search for a town or specific street address in Montana.
The address search engine will place a marker on the map at the location found and provide you with the formatted address that best matches your search.
Search for Coordinates You can search for specific coordinates within the map by choosing the degree of
Latitude and Longitude as well as specifying up to 6 digits passed the decimal for each coordinate type. If no digits are provided after the decimal, .000000 will be assumed.
Search for a Mapped Feature You can search for specific features within a Map Layer. First choose the Map Layer to search against then define
the unique identifier or code of the feature you are looking for . If a matching item is found, it will be hightlighted and the the map will zoom to its location.
Clear Map Highlights & Markers Each time you search and find an item in the map you will see a marker noting its location or see a highlighted
area. By choosing this option you can clear these items in the map if they obstruct your view.

This dataset includes waters listed in Montana's 305(b)/303(d) Integrated Water Quality Report published every two years as a new cycle by the DEQ Water Quality Planning Bureau in support of the federal Clean Water Act.
The report lists waters which have been assessed as fully supporting all applicable beneficial uses, waters determined to be water quality impaired for one or more beneficial uses, and waters where the information collected to date is not sufficient to complete beneficial use support determinations.
More information can be found via their CWAIC website.
Category 1
All beneficial uses have been assessed and all uses are fully supported.
Category 2
Available data and/or information indicate that some, but not all of the beneficial uses are supported.
Category 3
Insufficient or no data available to determine whether or not any beneficial use is attained.
Category 4A
All TMDLs required to mitigate identified impairments or threats have been completed and approved.
Category 4C
Identified threats or impairments result from pollution categories that do not require a TMDL, such as dewatering or habitat modification.
Category 5
One or more beneficial use is impaired or threatened and a TMDL is required.
Category 5,5N
One or more beneficial use is impaired or threatened and a TMDL is required & Available data and/or information indicate that a water quality standard is not met due to an apparent natural source in the absence of any identified man-made sources.
This feature class used to provide a spatial context for waterbody assessment units (AUs) throughout Montana and by the Department of Environmental Quality, Water Quality Planning Bureau.
TMDL Planning Areas (TPAs) are mostly based on the combination of 5th code (watershed level) 1:100,000-scale Hydrologic Unit Code (HUC) watershed boundaries. For additional information please visit the

30 yr Average Annual Precipitation (AAP) for 1981-2010 as created by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality Water Quality Program for completing hydrologic analysis, developing stream flow statistics, or doing other related water resource planning.
A case study was implemented for the state of Montana using the 1981-2010 water-year averages and a 400 m elevation grid. We compiled AAP estimates for over 1,400 stations across the region including 1,100 stations in Montana, and 300 adjacent to the state, to assure compatibility along the border for the analysis which is the most detailed compilation we are aware of.
Isohyetal lines were set at 2-inch increments under 20 inches and 10-inch increments above 20 inches ranging from 6 to 130 inches of estimated AAP.
For additional information please visit the
AAP metadata page.
