Holcim Inc. Files Application to Quarry Gypsum in Judith Basin County
(Helena) Holcim Inc. has filed an application with the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) for an operating permit to quarry gypsum on private land approximately 6.5 miles southeast of Geyser, MT in Judith Basin County. Gypsum has historically been mined at the site.
The operating permit would cover a total of 53 acres. About nine acres would be disturbed over the next five years, with about 53 acres being disturbed over the estimated 18 year life of the mine. Ground disturbance would range up to approximately 30 feet in depth. Blasting would be required about once a year.
Holcim would use trucks and heavy equipment to remove the gypsum and haul it to the company’s plant near Trident. There would be three to five truckloads per weekday and occasional hauling on weekends for eight months of the year.
The application is available to view at the DEQ office at 1520 E. 6th Ave., in Helena, MT and on the DEQ web page at www.deq.mt.gov. A draft Environmental Assessment is expected to be available for public comment early this spring.
