DEQ Receives Application for Placer Mine in Powell County
Helena – On September 11, 2012 the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) received an application from Golden Rule Placer Mining, Inc., for an operating permit to authorize placer mining on private land approximately 7 miles south of Gold Creek and about 15 miles northwest of Deer Lodge in Powell County.
The operating permit would cover a total of 60 acres. About 25.5 acres would be disturbed over the next five years. Ground disturbance would range up to approximately 50 feet in depth. Golden Rule would use trucks, dozers, loaders and excavators to remove the rock. Blasting would be required.
Golden Rule currently conducts mining activities at the site under a Small Miner Exclusion Statement (SMES). Golden Rule is applying for an operating permit because it is proposing to disturb more of the earth’s surface than the five acres that may be disturbed under a SMES.
The application will be posted on DEQ’s website at www.deq.mt.gov. For more information on the application contact Herb Rolfes, Operating Permit Section Supervisor, DEQ Environmental Management Bureau, P.O. Box 200901, Helena, MT 59620-0901, (406) 444-3841 or e-mail at email@example.com.
