DEQ Receives Application to Amend Golden Sunlight Mine Permit
Helena – The Montana Department of Environmental Quality has received an application from Golden Sunlight Mine, Inc. to amend their operating permit. The Golden Sunlight Mine is located in Jefferson County approximately 5 miles northeast of Whitehall, MT.
The proposed amendment would authorize a pit wall layback along the south wall of the existing Mineral Hill Pit (South Area Layback). Approximately 3 million tons of ore and 44.6 million tons of non-ore rock would be extracted from the Mineral Hill Pit as a result of the South Area Layback. The proposed amendment would also authorize the development of a new pit located approximately 1,000 feet northeast of the existing Mineral Hill Pit (North Pit). Approximately 1.2 million tons of ore and 8.0 million tons of non-ore rock would be extracted from the North Pit.
The height of the tailings impoundment would be increased by four feet in order to dispose of the additional tailings generated by processing the ore from the South Area Layback and the North Pit. The East Waste Rock Dump Complex would be increased from the currently permitted 683 acres to 721 acres. Access roads and diversion ditches would be constructed as well.
The amendment would extend mine life by 2 years. The mine life extension may provide for additional opportunity to process off-site ore, mostly derived from legacy mining materials located within southwest Montana.
Copies of the amendment application can be viewed at DEQ offices located at 1520 E. 6th Ave., in Helena, MT. The amendment application also will be posted on DEQ’s website at www.deq.mt.gov.
