DEQ Receives Application to Expand Rock Quarry in Blaine County
Helena – Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has received an application from Shumaker Trucking and Excavating Contractors, Inc., to amend Operating Permit number 00179 to include quarrying of rock that the company is currently conducting under a Small Miner Exclusion Statement. The quarry produces rock products and is located on private land approximately 14 miles southeast of Chinook, MT.
Under the proposed amendment, the permitted acreage at the quarry would total approximately 160 acres. Approximately 15 to 25 acres would be disturbed over the next five years and approximately 53 acres would be disturbed over the estimated 50 year life of the mine. Ground would be disturbed to a maximum depth of 50 feet. Shumaker would use trucks, dozers, loaders and excavators to remove the rock. Blasting would be required. A portable processing plant, crushers, a pugmill, and an asphalt plant would be set up on site.
Copies of the amendment application can be reviewed at DEQ offices at 1520 E. 6th Ave., Helena, MT. The application will also be posted on DEQ’s web page, www.deq.mt.gov.
