DEQ Seeks Comments on Draft Flint Creek Planning Water Quality Improvement Plan

Helena -- The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is accepting public comments on the Draft Flint Creek Planning Area Sediment and Metals TMDLs and Framework Water Quality Improvement Plan document.

In simple terms, a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) is a plan to attain and maintain water quality standards in waters that are not currently meeting them. The waters not currently meeting water quality standards for sediment and metals in the Flint Creek Watershed have been identified and described in the Draft Flint Creek Planning Area Sediment and Metals TMDLs and Framework Water Quality Improvement Plan. The document also presents a draft plan to attain and maintain water quality standards in all of those waters considered impaired.

A public informational meeting will be held on Wednesday March 7, 2012 at the Granite County Museum and Cultural Center located in Philipsburg, Montana. The meeting will be held from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. DEQ representatives will provide an open house style forum to provide information about the document, answer questions, and engage in discussion. This meeting is being conducted with coordination from the Granite Headwaters Watershed Group.

The draft document is available on the DEQ web site at www.deq.mt.gov. Electronic copies are available at the Granite County Conservation District, Philipsburg and Anaconda Public Libraries and the State Library in Helena. Public comments will be accepted until 5 p.m., March 19, 2012. Comments may be mailed to Montana Department of Environmental Quality, P.O. Box 200901, Helena, Montana 59620-0901, or submitted electronically at: http://comment.cwaic.mt.gov/commentpage.aspx?cmntkey=8L9pOGwD3j.
